Rama Ekadashi (Kartik Krishna Ekadashi)Deity: Lord Vishnu (Keshava) & Goddess Lakshmi (Rama)

Rama Ekadashi Vrat Katha (Princess Chandrabhaga & Prince Shobhana)

Narrated by Lord Shri Krishna to Dharmaraj Yudhishthira in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Rama Ekadashi is named after 'Rama'тАФan auspicious name of Goddess Mahalakshmi. Observed four days prior to Diwali in the sacred month of Kartik, this Ekadashi destroys sins as grave as Brahmahatya and bestows eternal prosperity, stability of fortune, and Vaikuntha Moksha.

Vrat Observance & Fast-Breaking Rules

  • Give up grains, beans, rice, and tamasic food from the sunset of Dashami Tithi.
  • Take a holy bath at Brahma Muhurta on Ekadashi and worship Lord Keshava (Vishnu) with Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, and Panchamrit.
  • Listen to or read the sacred рдХрдерд╛ of King Muchukunda, Princess Chandrabhaga, and Prince Shobhana.
  • Perform Deepdaan (lighting ghee/sesame oil lamps) before Lord Vishnu and Tulsi Mata in the evening of Kartik month.
Fast-Breaking (Parana) Guidance: Break the fast (Parana) on Dwadashi morning after sunrise within Hari Vasara conclude window, offering food and dakshina to a Brahmin first.
Chapter 1

King Muchukunda's Righteous Rule and Prince Shobhana's Dilemma

King Muchukunda is a devout Vaishnava ruler in whose kingdom everyoneтАФincluding animalsтАФstrictly observes Ekadashi without food or water. When his daughter Chandrabhaga visits with her physically frail husband Prince Shobhana on the eve of Rama Ekadashi, Shobhana faces a life-threatening test.
Dharmaraj Yudhishthira inquired: 'O Janardana! What is the name and glory of the Ekadashi falling in the dark fortnight of Kartik month?' Lord Shri Krishna replied: 'O King! This supreme Ekadashi is called Rama Ekadashi. Listen to its ancient history. In bygone ages ruled a righteous and truthful monarch named Muchukunda. He was a friend of Indra, Varuna, Kubera, and Vibhishana, and an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. In his kingdom, the rule of Ekadashi was observed with such sacred strictness that neither humans nor royal elephants and horses consumed a grain of food on that day. King Muchukunda had a virtuous daughter named Chandrabhaga, who was wedded to Prince Shobhana, son of King Chandrasena. Once during the month of Kartik, Prince Shobhana was visiting his father-in-law's palace when Rama Ekadashi approached. On Dashami, royal drums proclaimed across the city that none should eat or drink on the morrow. Prince Shobhana, who possessed a very delicate constitution and could not endure hunger even for a few hours, grew deeply anxious and asked his wife Chandrabhaga how he could survive the fast.'
Spiritual Moral: Spiritual vows require physical and mental readiness; true dharma tests one's resolve in times of discomfort.
Chapter 2

Shobhana's Fast, Passing Away, and Celestial Reward on Mandarachala

To protect his royal honor, Prince Shobhana resolves to observe the Rama Ekadashi fast despite his weakness. He passes away before sunrise on Dwadashi, but by the supreme merit of Rama Ekadashi, he is reborn as the ruler of a jewel-studded celestial city on Mount MandarachalaтАФalbeit an unstable one because he fasted without full faith.
Chandrabhaga gently told her husband: 'My Lord, in my father's realm not even cattle touch grass on Ekadashi. If you cannot endure the fast, please return to your palace today itself.' Stirred by royal pride, Shobhana declared: 'I will not flee in fear! Whatever destiny holds, I shall observe the sacred Rama Ekadashi fast.' Shobhana fasted without food or water, but his frail body succumbed to hunger and thirst before daybreak on Dwadashi. King Muchukunda performed his royal funeral rites with deep sorrow, while devout Chandrabhaga remained in her father's house, dedicating her life to worshipping Lord Vishnu and observing every Ekadashi with unwavering faith. Meanwhile, by the extraordinary merit of Rama Ekadashi, Shobhana was elevated to a magnificent, jewel-encrusted celestial kingdom atop Mount Mandarachala, served by Gandharvas and Apsaras. Some time later, a Brahmin named Somasharma from Muchukunda's kingdom arrived at Mandarachala during pilgrimage and recognized Prince Shobhana on a golden throne! Shobhana explained: 'O learned Brahmin! I attained this divine realm through the Rama Ekadashi fast; yet because I observed it reluctantly without inner faith (Shraddha), this kingdom is unstable (Adhruva). Only the pure merit of my devoted wife Chandrabhaga can make it eternal!'
Spiritual Moral: Even an unwilling observance of Ekadashi yields celestial fruit, yet actions performed without Shraddha (faith) lack permanence.
Chapter 3

Chandrabhaga Bestows Her Ekadashi Merit and Attains Eternal Reunion

Upon hearing the news from Somasharma, Princess Chandrabhaga travels to Mount Mandarachala with Sage Vamadeva. By offering the accumulated merit of all her faithful Ekadashi fasts since childhood, she makes Shobhana's celestial kingdom eternal and unchanging.
Brahmin Somasharma hastened back and narrated the miraculous account to Princess Chandrabhaga. Overjoyed to learn of her husband's celestial existence, she implored the Brahmin to lead her to Mount Mandarachala at once. On the way, they stopped at the hermitage of Sage Vamadeva. Through Vedic mantras and the accumulated power of her lifelong Ekadashi vows, Sage Vamadeva consecrated Chandrabhaga, transforming her mortal frame into a radiant celestial body. Ascending Mount Mandarachala, she was joyfully reunited with Prince Shobhana. Seated beside her beloved on the golden throne, Chandrabhaga poured sacred water in sankalpa and declared: 'O Lord! By the pure merit of every Ekadashi fast I have observed with complete faith since the age of eight, may your celestial kingdom become eternal, unshakable, and imperishable until the end of the cosmic age!' Instantly, the realm became permanent and resplendent. Lord Krishna concluded: 'O Yudhishthira! Whoever observes Rama Ekadashi and hears this katha with faith is freed from all sins and blessed with eternal Lakshmi and Vaikuntha.'
Spiritual Moral: Devotion performed with steadfast Shraddha (faith) since youth transforms transient fortune into eternal spiritual perfection.
