Shri Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat Katha (The Legend of Pious Sheila & Ashta Lakshmi)

Sheila and her husband lived a peaceful, devout life in a bustling city. Influenced by wicked acquaintances, the husband falls into gambling and addictions, plunging the happy home into humiliating poverty and debt.

In ancient times, in a flourishing city, lived a pious and gentle woman named Sheila along with her loving husband. Sheila was the embodiment of contentment, hospitality, and virtue; she rejoiced in simple living and spent her hours in devotion. Her husband was industrious and kind, and their household radiated joy and peace. However, through adverse destiny, the husband fell into the company of corrupt companions who lured him with dreams of effortless wealth. Slowly, he descended into the ruinous vices of gambling, lottery, and intoxication. Within months, he squandered his entire savings. Furniture, family heirlooms, jewels, and clothes were sold to settle mounting debts. The once-prosperous household was reduced to squalid poverty where finding a single meal was a struggle. Harsh creditors pounded at the door demanding repayment. Bitter and defeated, the husband took out his frustration by verbally and physically abusing his gentle wife. Yet pious Sheila never retaliated; swallowing her tears, she prayed silently to the Almighty for her husband's redemption and the preservation of her family's honor.

One Friday afternoon, an elderly woman with radiant eyes knocks on Sheila's door. Sensing divine presence, Sheila serves her with love. The woman reveals herself as an emissary of Goddess Mahalakshmi and explains the 8 forms of Ashta Lakshmi and the Friday vow.

One Friday afternoon, as Sheila sat weeping before the household altar in despair, a gentle knock sounded at the doorway. Opening the door, Sheila beheld an elderly woman of celestial countenance. Her face radiated an unearthly glow of peace, compassion, and divine motherly grace. Intuitively sensing a holy presence, Sheila bowed deeply, spreading a clean mat for the elderly guest. Though her cupboards were bare, she offered cool water and washed the visitor's tired feet with profound reverence. Stroking Sheila's head with infinite tenderness, the old woman asked: 'My child Sheila, your eyes overflow with grief; what troubles your soul?' Breaking down, Sheila poured out her sorrow—her husband's ruinous addictions, their crushing debts, and her daily humiliation. The old woman smiled radiantly: 'Weep no more, my daughter. Goddess Mahalakshmi is the ocean of compassion. Whoever observes the sacred Friday vow of 'Vaibhav Lakshmi' with a pure heart is forever liberated from poverty. Know that Mahalakshmi manifests in eight divine forms (Ashta Lakshmi): Dhana Lakshmi (Wealth), Dhanya Lakshmi (Grains), Dhairya Lakshmi (Patience), Shaurya Lakshmi (Courage), Vidya Lakshmi (Knowledge), Keerti Lakshmi (Fame), Vijaya Lakshmi (Victory), and Rajya Lakshmi (Sovereignty). Begin this vow from this very Friday. At dusk, set a water kalash on a red altar, place a gold or silver ornament, offer lotus flowers and sweet rice kheer, and read the sacred katha. Your fortune shall be restored!' Saying this, the elderly woman vanished into thin air! Sheila fell to the earth, realizing that Mother Mahalakshmi Herself had visited her home.

Placing her last remaining silver nose-ring upon the Kalash, she cooked sweet kheer, meditated upon the Ashta Lakshmi forms, and recited the sacred verses. From the very next morning, divine miracles manifested! An overwhelming wave of remorse struck her husband's conscience. Weeping bitterly, he fell at Sheila's feet: 'Forgive me, beloved! I have wronged you and destroyed our home. From this moment, I swear never to touch gambling or drink again!' The husband renounced all vices and applied himself diligently to honest trade. When her vow of 21 Fridays was fulfilled, Sheila organized a grand Udhyapan. She invited 21 married women, served them sweet rice kheer and delicacies, gifted them auspicious red vermilion and bangles, and presented each woman with a copy of the sacred 'Shri Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat Katha' book so that all might learn to dispel poverty from their homes.
