Dhanteras & Yama Deepdaan Vrat Katha (Lord Dhanvantari & King Hima's Son)

Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi) marks the commencement of the 5-day Deepavali Mahaparva. On this sacred Trayodashi, Lord DhanvantariтАФthe divine physician and father of AyurvedaтАФemerged from the cosmic Ocean of Milk holding the Kalash of Amrit (nectar of immortality). Simultaneously, lighting the four-faced Yama Deepam at the main entrance during Pradosh Kaal protects the entire family from untimely death (Akaal Mrityu).

  • Light a four-wick mustard oil lamp (Yama Deepam) atop a heap of grains outside the main door facing South.

Chapter 1

Emergence of Lord Dhanvantari from Samudra Manthan

During the churning of the cosmic ocean by Devas and Asuras, Lord Vishnu incarnates as Lord Dhanvantari on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, holding the golden pot of Amrit and sacred herbs, bestowing the science of Ayurveda upon humanity.
In ancient times, when the Devas and Asuras churned the cosmic Ocean of Milk using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki as the rope, fourteen divine treasures emerged. On the thirteenth lunar day (Trayodashi) of the dark fortnight of Kartik, a radiant four-armed deity surfaced from the ocean depths, clad in yellow silk and glowing like a dark raincloud. He was Lord Dhanvantari, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu Himself, holding a conch, discus, medicinal herbs, and the golden Kalash filled with Amrit (the nectar of immortality). The sages and celestials hymned His glory as He revealed the sacred science of Ayurveda to heal all living beings from disease and suffering. Because He appeared holding the golden Kalash on this day, purchasing vessels, gold, and silver on Dhanteras became an eternal tradition of invoking both health (Arogya) and wealth (Sampada).
Spiritual Moral: True wealth begins with vibrant health (Arogya); Lord Dhanvantari blesses devotees with physical and spiritual vitality.
Chapter 2

King Hima's Son and the Miracle of Yama Deepdaan

Foretold to die from snakebite on the fourth night of his wedding, King Hima's young son is saved by his wise bride, who heaps dazzling ornaments and lamps at the doorway and sings Lord's glories all night, blinding the serpent-form of Yama.
According to the Skanda Purana, Lord Yama once asked his messengers if they had ever felt pity while taking a mortal's soul. The messengers recounted the story of King Hima's son. Astrologers had prophesied at the prince's birth that he would die from a snakebite on the fourth night after his wedding. When the prince grew up, he married a deeply pious and intelligent princess. On the fateful fourth night after their wedding, the fearless bride devised a brilliant plan. She piled all her gold and silver ornaments, gems, and coins in heaps at the bedroom doorway and lit hundreds of radiant lamps around the chamber. Then, keeping her husband awake, she melodiously sang devotional hymns and sacred stories throughout the night. At midnight, when the God of Death arrived in the guise of a serpent, his eyes were completely dazzled by the blinding brilliance of the lamps reflecting off the heaps of gold and jewels! Unable to crawl past the threshold, the serpent sat atop the heap of ornaments, captivated by the bride's devotional singing until sunrise. As dawn broke, the destined hour of death passed harmlessly away, and Yama departed without taking the prince's life. Hearing this, Lord Yama proclaimed: 'Whoever lights a four-faced lamp facing South on the evening of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi (Dhanteras) in my honor shall forever be protected from untimely death (Akaal Mrityu)!'
Spiritual Moral: Devotion, wisdom, and the sacred Yama Deepdaan on Dhanteras dispel the darkness of fear and untimely calamity.
