The foundational 16-mantra Vedic hymn from the Rigveda invoking Mother Lakshmi in Her golden, celestial splendor during Diwali Lakshmi Pujan.

ॐ हिरण्यवर्णां हरिणीं सुवर्णरजतस्रजाम्। चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो म आवह॥१॥
Om Hiraṇyavarṇāṁ Hariṇīṁ Suvarṇa-Rajata-Srajām | Candrāṁ Hiraṇmayīṁ Lakṣmīṁ Jātavedo Ma Āvaha || 1 ||
Meaning: Invoke for me, O Agni, that radiant Lakshmi who shines like burnished gold, gentle as a doe, adorned with golden and silver garlands, luminous like the cooling moon!
तां म आवह जातवेदो लक्ष्मीमनपगामिनीम्। यस्यां हिरण्यं विन्देयं गामश्वं पुरुषानहम्॥२॥
Tāṁ Ma Āvaha Jātavedo Lakṣmīm-Anapagāminīm | Yasyāṁ Hiraṇyaṁ Vindeyaṁ Gāmaśvaṁ Puruṣānaham || 2 ||
Meaning: Invoke for me, O Agni, that Lakshmi who never departs! Through whom I may obtain pure gold, cattle, noble horses, and loving family!
अश्वपूर्वां रथमध्यां हस्तिनादप्रबोधिनीम्। श्रियं देवीमुपह्वये श्रीर्मा देवी जुषताम्॥३॥
Aśvapūrvāṁ Rathamadhyāṁ Hastināda-Prabodhinīm | Śriyaṁ Devīm-Upahvaye Śrīrmā Devī Juṣatām || 3 ||
Meaning: Preceded by noble horses, seated in a celestial chariot, awakened by trumpeting royal elephants! I invite that supreme Mother Shri; may She be pleased with me!
कां सोस्मितां हिरण्यप्राकारामार्द्रां ज्वलन्तीं तृप्तां तर्पयन्तीम्। पद्मे स्थितां पद्मवर्णां तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम्॥४॥
Kāṁ Sosmitāṁ Hiraṇyaprākārām-Ārdrāṁ Jvalantīṁ Tṛptāṁ Tarpayantīm | Padme Sthitāṁ Padmavarṇāṁ Tāmihopahvaye Śriyam || 4 ||
Meaning: She who smiles sweetly, shielded by walls of gold, melting with deep compassion, resplendent, completely fulfilled and fulfilling all desires! Seated upon a lotus—here I invoke that Divine Mother!
चन्द्रां प्रभासां यशसा ज्वलन्तीं श्रियं लोके देवजुष्टामुदाराम्। तां पद्मिनीमीं शरणमहं प्रपद्येऽलक्ष्मीर्मे नश्यतां त्वां वृणे॥५॥
Candrāṁ Prabhāsāṁ Yaśasā Jvalantīṁ Śriyaṁ Loke Devajuṣṭām-Udārām | Tāṁ Padminīm-Īṁ Śaraṇam-Ahaṁ Prapadye'lakṣmīr-Me Naśyatāṁ Tvāṁ Vṛṇe || 5 ||
Meaning: Luminous like the moon, blazing with sacred fame, revered by all gods, generous beyond measure! I surrender to You, O Lotus Goddess; may misfortune and Alakshmi be destroyed forever as I choose You!
आदित्यवर्णे तपसोऽधिजातो वनस्पतिस्तव वृक्षोऽथ बिल्वः। तस्य फलानि तपसानुदन्तु मायान्तरायाश्च बाह्या अलक्ष्मीः॥६॥
Ādityavarṇe Tapaso'dhijāto Vanaspatis-Tava Vṛkṣo'tha Bilvaḥ | Tasya Phalāni Tapasānudantu Māyāntarāyāśca Bāhyā Alakṣmīḥ || 6 ||
Meaning: O Goddess of solar brilliance! Born of Your penance is the sacred Bilva tree. May its auspicious fruits dispel all internal ignorance and external poverty from our lives!
उपैतु मां देवसखः कीर्तिश्च मणिना सह। प्रादुर्भूतो सुराष्ट्रेऽस्मिन् कीर्तिमृद्धिं ददातु मे॥७॥
Upaitu Māṁ Devasakhaḥ Kīrtiśca Maṇinā Saha | Prādurbhūto Surāṣṭre'smin Kīrtim-Ṛddhiṁ Dadātu Me || 7 ||
Meaning: May Lord Kuber (friend of the Gods) come to me alongside glory and celestial gems! Born in this blessed land, bestow upon me lasting honour, virtue, and prosperity!
क्षुत्पिपासामलां ज्येष्ठामलक्ष्मीं नाशयाम्यहम्। अभूतिमसमृद्धिं च सर्वान् निर्णुद मे गृहात्॥८॥
Kṣutpipāsāmalāṁ Jyeṣṭhām-Alakṣmīṁ Nāśayāmyaham | Abhūtim-Asamṛddhiṁ Ca Sarvān Nirṇuda Me Gṛhāt || 8 ||
Meaning: I banish the elder sister Alakshmi, afflicted with hunger, thirst, and distress. Cast out all scarcity, decline, and misfortune from my home forever!
गन्धद्वारां दुराधर्षां नित्यपुष्टां करीषिणीम्। ईश्वरीं सर्वभूतानां तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम्॥९॥
Gandhadvārāṁ Durādharṣāṁ Nityapuṣṭāṁ Karīṣiṇīm | Īśvarīṁ Sarvabhūtānāṁ Tāmihopahvaye Śriyam || 9 ||
Meaning: Perceived through sacred fragrances, invincible, ever-nourished, rich in fertility! Sovereign Goddess of all creation—here I invoke that Divine Mother Shri!
मनसः काममाकूतिं वाचः सत्यमशीमहि। पशूनां रूपमन्नस्य मयि श्रीः श्रयतां यशः॥१०॥
Manasaḥ Kāmam-Ākūtiṁ Vācaḥ Satyam-Aśīmahi | Paśūnāṁ Rūpam-Annasya Mayi Śrīḥ Śrayatāṁ Yaśaḥ || 10 ||
Meaning: May the purest aspirations of my heart and the truth of my speech be fulfilled! May livestock, abundance of grains, radiant grace, and glorious fame abide in me!
कर्दमेन प्रजाभूता मयि सम्भव कर्दम। श्रियं वासय मे कुले मातरं पद्ममालिनीम्॥११॥
Kardamena Prajābhūtā Mayi Sambhava Kardama | Śriyaṁ Vāsaya Me Kule Mātaraṁ Padmamālinīm || 11 ||
Meaning: O Sage Kardama, through whom Mother Lakshmi manifests! Abide in me and cause Mother Lakshmi, garlanded with fragrant lotuses, to dwell eternally in my lineage!
आपः सृजन्तु स्निग्धानि चिक्लीत वस मे गृहे। निच देवीं मातरं श्रियं वासय मे कुले॥१२॥
Āpaḥ Sṛjantu Snigdhāni Ciklīta Vasa Me Gṛhe | Nica Devīṁ Mātaraṁ Śriyaṁ Vāsaya Me Kule || 12 ||
Meaning: May pure celestial waters create auspiciousness! O Chiklita, dwell in my house and cause the Divine Mother Shri to establish Her eternal abode in my family!
आर्द्रां पुष्करिणीं पुष्टिं पिङ्गलां पद्ममालिनीम्। चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो म आवह॥१३॥
Ārdrāṁ Puṣkariṇīṁ Puṣṭiṁ Piṅgalāṁ Padmamālinīm | Candrāṁ Hiraṇmayīṁ Lakṣmīṁ Jātavedo Ma Āvaha || 13 ||
Meaning: Ever compassionate, lotus-rich, bestower of nourishment, golden-hued, garlanded with lotuses, cooling as the moon, resplendent in gold—invoke Her, O Agni!
आर्द्रां यः करिणीं यष्टिं सुवर्णां हेममालिनीम्। सूर्यां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो म आवह॥१४॥
Ārdrāṁ Yaḥ Kariṇīṁ Yaṣṭiṁ Suvarṇāṁ Hemamālinīm | Sūryāṁ Hiraṇmayīṁ Lakṣmīṁ Jātavedo Ma Āvaha || 14 ||
Meaning: Gentle mother of royal authority, bearing the golden staff of sovereignty, garlanded in pure gold, brilliant like the sun—invoke Her, O Agni!
तां म आवह जातवेदो लक्ष्मीमनपगामिनीम्। यस्यां हिरण्यं प्रभूतं गावो दास्योऽश्वान् विन्देयं पुरुषानहम्॥१५॥
Tāṁ Ma Āvaha Jātavedo Lakṣmīm-Anapagāminīm | Yasyāṁ Hiraṇyaṁ Prabhūtaṁ Gāvo Dāsyo'śvān Vindeyaṁ Puruṣānaham || 15 ||
Meaning: Invoke for me, O Agni, that Lakshmi who never abandons! Through whose grace I may attain boundless gold, herds of cattle, noble assistants, swift horses, and righteous kin!
यः शुचिः प्रयतो भूत्वा जुहुयादाज्यमन्वहम्। सूक्तं पञ्चदशर्चं च श्रीकामः सततं जपेत्॥१६॥
Yaḥ Śuciḥ Prayato Bhūtvā Juhuyād-Ājyam-Anvaham | Sūktaṁ Pañcadaśarcaṁ Ca Śrīkāmaḥ Satataṁ Japet || 16 ||
Meaning: Whoever, purified and self-controlled, offers pure ghee oblations daily while chanting these fifteen sacred verses shall be blessed with eternal abundance and spiritual fulfillment!
पद्मप्रिये पद्मिनि पद्महस्ते पद्मालये पद्मदलायताक्षि। विश्वप्रिये विष्णुमनोऽनुकूले त्वत्पादपद्मं मयि सन्निधत्स्व॥
Padmapriye Padmini Padmahaste Padmālaye Padmadalāyatākṣi | Viśvapriye Viṣṇu-Mano'nukūle Tvat-Pāda-Padmaṁ Mayi Sannidhatsva ||
Meaning: Phalasruti: O Beloved of Lotuses, holding lotuses, dwelling in the lotus, with wide eyes like lotus petals! Beloved of the cosmos, delighter of Lord Vishnu's heart—establish Your sacred lotus feet forever in my heart and home!
