Shaniwar (Saturday) Vrat & Sade Sati / Dhaiya ShantiDeity: Lord Shanidev (Suryaputra Karmaphal Data)

Shaniwar Shanidev Vrat Katha (The Legend of King Vikramaditya & Navagraha)

Lord Shanidev is the supreme magistrate of Karma (Karmaphal Data) among the Navagrahas. The classic Saturday Vrat Katha recounts the assembly of the nine planets in the court of Emperor Vikramaditya, the severe trials of Sade Sati when Vikramaditya inadvertently offended Shanidev, and his miraculous restoration of limbs and throne when he sang Shanidev's glory with unwavering devotion.

Vrat Observance & Fast-Breaking Rules

  • Observe the fast on 7, 11, 21, or 51 Saturdays starting from the first Saturday of Shukla Paksha.
  • Perform Tailabhishek (mustard/sesame oil offering) to Lord Shanidev and light a lamp under the Peepal tree on Saturday evening.
  • Partake of a single Sattvic meal of black urad dal khichdi or sesame-jaggery prasad in the evening.
  • Serve the poor, workers, and feed black dogs or crows with compassion.
Fast-Breaking (Parana) Guidance: Conclude the Saturday fast in the evening after sunset Tailabhishek and Katha recitation by taking Urad Dal Khichdi or sweet sesame prasad.
Chapter 1

The Debate of the Nine Planets and King Vikramaditya's Judgment

A dispute arises among the nine planets (Navagrahas) over who is supreme. Seeking an impartial judge, they approach the legendary King Vikramaditya of Ujjain, who devises a clever test of nine metallic thronesтАФplacing Iron (Shanidev's metal) last.
Once in ancient times, a dispute arose among the nine celestial planets (Navagrahas)тАФSurya, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Brihaspati, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, and KetuтАФover who among them was the greatest. Unable to decide without offending them, Indra advised them to seek the judgment of the wise and righteous Emperor Vikramaditya of Ujjain. When the Navagrahas posed their question, King Vikramaditya realized that favoring one would anger the others. He ingeniously commissioned nine thrones made of gold, silver, bronze, brass, lead, tin, zinc, mica, and iron, placing the iron throne at the very end. He invited the planets to sit on their respective metals, declaring that the order of thrones would signify their rank. Since iron belonged to Lord Shanidev, He was seated last. Offended, Shanidev thundered: 'O Vikramaditya! You do not know my cosmic power! While the Sun stays in a zodiac sign for a month and Jupiter for thirteen months, my Sade Sati lasts seven and a half years! When my gaze fell upon Lord Rama, He went into exile; when it fell upon Ravana, his golden Lanka perished! Beware my wrath!' Vikramaditya bowed calmly and replied: 'O Lord, whatever destiny ordains shall come to pass.'
Spiritual Moral: Even the wisest mortals are subject to the cosmic law of Karma and the planetary transitions of time.
Chapter 2

The Ordeal of Sade Sati: False Accusation and Loss of Limbs

When Shanidev's Sade Sati begins, He arrives disguised as a horse merchant. Riding a swift horse, Vikramaditya is stranded in a dense forest, falsely accused of stealing a necklace swallowed by a wooden peg in a merchant's house, and has his hands and feet amputated by the local king.
Soon, Shanidev's seven-and-a-half-year transit (Sade Sati) commenced upon King Vikramaditya. Disguised as a horse trader, Shanidev brought magnificent steeds to Ujjain. The moment Vikramaditya mounted a swift horse to test it, the steed galloped like the wind into a dense wilderness and vanished! Hungry and lost, the king wandered into the distant city of Tamalinga. When he rested outside a wealthy merchant's shop, the merchant's sales miraculously multiplied. Deeming the stranger auspicious, the merchant invited him home for dinner and lodging. In the guest chamber where Vikramaditya rested, a priceless diamond necklace hung upon a wooden peg on the wall. Before the king's astonished eyes, the inanimate wooden peg swallowed the entire necklace! In the morning, finding the necklace gone, the merchant accused his guest of theft. Bound by royal dignity and knowing none would believe the miracle of the peg, Vikramaditya remained silent. The king of Tamalinga ordered the stranger's hands and feet amputated and left him helpless outside the city gates.
Spiritual Moral: In times of severe karmic testing, patience and silent fortitude preserve the soul's inner nobility.
Chapter 3

Rag Malhar at the Oil-Presser's House and Shanidev's Supreme Boon

Taken in by a kind oil-presser (Teli), Vikramaditya drives the bullock oil-mill while singing devotional hymns. At the completion of 7.5 years, his soulful singing of Rag Malhar lights all the city's lamps. Pleased, Shanidev restores his hands and feet, the peg disgorges the necklace, and Vikramaditya returns to Ujjain in glory.
A compassionate oil-presser (Teli) took pity on the crippled stranger and brought him home, where Vikramaditya guided the bullocks of the oil-mill with his voice while chanting the Lord's name. Thus, seven and a half years of patient endurance passed. One Saturday evening during the monsoon, Vikramaditya sang the classical 'Rag Malhar' and hymns to Lord Shanidev with such transcendent devotion that the entire town was spellbound. Captivated by the divine voice, the local princess Mohini vowed to marry none other than the singer, even after learning he was a disabled worker at the oil-mill. That very night, Lord Shanidev appeared in radiant glory before Vikramaditya: 'O Emperor! Your Sade Sati has concluded. Even amidst unimaginable suffering, you never abandoned righteousness or patience! Ask for any boon!' Folding his hands, Vikramaditya prayed: 'O Lord Shanidev! Never subject any mortal to the agony I endured. May whoever observes the Saturday fast, offers sesame oil, and listens to this sacred katha be freed from all afflictions of Sade Sati!' Shanidev blessed him with 'Tathastu!' Instantly, Vikramaditya's hands and feet were restored in full vigor. At the merchant's house, the wooden peg disgorged the diamond necklace before everyone's eyes! Repentant and overjoyed, both the king of Tamalinga and the merchant honored Emperor Vikramaditya, who returned to Ujjain in supreme glory.
Spiritual Moral: Steadfast dharma, humility, and devotion to Lord Shanidev turn the severest karmic trials into lasting glory.
