Chapter 1
The Unfortunate Curse of the Syahoo Porcupine
A prosperous moneylender had seven sons and a devoted daughter-in-law. While digging clay in the forest for Diwali renovations, she accidentally strikes and kills a young cub of Syahoo (porcupine), triggering a heartbreaking curse.
In ancient times, there lived a prosperous merchant with seven sons and seven daughters-in-law. Days prior to Diwali, the daughters-in-law went to the forest to dig pure yellow clay for whitewashing their household. While digging with a spade, the youngest daughter-in-law accidentally struck a burrow where a newborn cub of a Syahoo (hedgehog/porcupine) rested, killing it instantly. Deeply sorrowed, she wept in fear. Soon, Mother Syahoo arrived and, seeing her lifeless cub, wailed in torment, placing a bitter curse: 'Whoever destroyed my womb, I bind their womb so that their children will never survive!' Terrified, the young woman returned home and begged her elder sisters-in-law to share the burden of the curse. Moved by pity, one of the elder sisters accepted the curse upon herself. Under the curse's spell, whenever she gave birth to a babe, the child passed away within seven days. After losing seven sons one after another, the grieving mother fell into inconsolable anguish.
Spiritual Moral: Even unintended harm to innocent creatures produces karmic ripples that require deep repentance.
Chapter 2
Service to Surabhi Cow and the Restoration of Life
Seeking counsel from learned sages, the mother dedicated herself to the selfless service of the divine cow Surabhi. Pleased by her devotion, Surabhi brings Syahoo Mata, who forgives her and restores all seven sons to life.
Desperate for redemption, the grieving mother sought the guidance of holy sages. They counseled: 'Observe the waterless fast of Goddess Ahoi on Kartik Krishna Ashtami and serve Mother Surabhi, the divine cow, with absolute humility.' The woman began tending the sacred cow daily, cleaning her hooves, offering fresh grass, and massaging her limbs. Pleased by her selfless love, Surabhi seated her on her back and flew across oceans to the mystical realm of Syahoo Mata. Along the journey, the woman rescued a peacock chick from a venomous serpent. In gratitude, the mother bird guided her to Syahoo Mata's dwelling. Approaching the deity with profound reverence, the woman gently massaged Syahoo's tired brow. Touched by the soothing touch, Syahoo declared: 'You have brought great relief to my heart. Ask whatever boon you desire.' Falling to her knees, the mother wept: 'O Mother, my womb is barren and my seven sons lie dead. Bestow your grace and grant them life!' Recognizing her and witnessing her pure repentance, Syahoo's heart melted. She blessed her: 'Go, my daughter! Observe my sacred fast on Kartik Krishna Ashtami, offer Arghya to the evening stars, and wear the holy silver Syahoo. Your sons shall return.' Returning home, the mother observed the strict fast with radiant devotion. As she offered milk and holy water to the evening stars, all seven of her sons came running home alive and healthy. From that day forth, mothers celebrate Ahoi Ashtami across the world. Victory to Maa Ahoi!
Spiritual Moral: Sincere repentance, selflessness, and devotion to the divine Mother can overturn even the heaviest fate.
