Step-by-Step Pooja Vidhi

1

Morning Bath and Clean Cotton Garments (प्रातः स्नान)

Wake before dawn. Take a purifying bath and put on clean, dry clothes. Do not consume anything before offering Arghya.

2

Preparing the Copper Lota (लोटे में अर्घ्य सामग्री संयोजन)

Fill the copper lota with pure water. Add a pinch of red sandalwood powder (or roli), a few unbroken grains of akshat, a red flower, and a small pinch of jaggery.

3

Raising Hands and Pouring the Water Stream (अर्घ्य अर्पण)

Stand barefoot facing East. Raise both hands above your forehead level. Slowly tilt the copper lota, allowing the water to fall in an unbroken gentle stream while gazing at the rising sun through the water cascade.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
ॐ सूर्याय नमः। ॐ ह्रीं ह्रीं सूर्याय सहस्रकिरणाय मनोवांछित फलं देहि देहि स्वाहा॥
4

Touching Holy Water Drops to Eyes and Forehead (चरणामृत स्पर्श)

Do not step on the spilled holy water. Place a clean dish or plant pot beneath to collect water. Dip ring fingers into the water drops on the vessel rim and gently touch your eyes, forehead, and throat.

5

Three Clockwise Pradakshinas & Gayatri Japa (परिक्रमा एवं जप)

Turn clockwise at your spot three times while chanting 'Om Namo Suryaya'. Then close eyes and chant the sacred Gayatri Mantra 11 or 21 times.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥

Dos (Auspicious Actions)

  • Always offer Arghya using a clean copper (Tamra) lota
  • Ensure the poured water lands in a potted plant (Tulsi or flowering plant) rather than being trodden underfoot
  • Offer Arghya barefoot on an Asana or clean ground facing East

Don'ts (Things to Avoid)

  • Never let the water stream fall directly onto dirty ground where it will be stepped upon
  • Do not offer Surya Arghya in plastic, stainless steel, or glass containers
  • Never offer Arghya facing any direction other than East in the morning

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can Surya Arghya be offered on cloudy or rainy days?
Yes. Even when the physical Sun is hidden by cloud cover, the solar cosmic principle remains active. Face the Eastern direction and offer Arghya with full faith.
