Fast-Breaking (Parana) Guidance: After offering Usha Arghya to the rising Sun on Saptami morning, taking blessings of Chhathi Maiya and elders, break the fast with raw ginger, sprouted gram, and water.
Chapter 1
King Priyavrata, Queen Malini and the Grief of the Lifeless Prince
King Priyavrata and Queen Malini perform Putrakameshti Yajna through Sage Kashyapa; though blessed with a child, the infant is born lifeless, plunging the King into suicidal despair at the cremation ground.
According to the Brahmavaivarta Purana and Markandeya Purana, King Priyavrata, son of Svayambhuva Manu, ruled his kingdom with righteousness alongside Queen Malini. Despite enjoying immense royal prosperity, they were childless, which cast a shadow of deep melancholy over their lives.
Moved by their plight, Maharishi Kashyapa visited the royal palace and conducted a sacred Putrakameshti Yajna. At the conclusion of the sacrifice, the sage offered divine consecrated sweet rice (kheer) to Queen Malini. Consuming the prasadam with devotion, the Queen conceived.
However, after nine months of gestation, the newborn prince was born lifeless. The tragedy plunged the entire realm into grief. Brokenhearted, King Priyavrata could not endure the agony. Taking the lifeless infant in his arms, he walked to the cremation grounds. Preparing the pyre, the King resolved to cast himself into the flames and end his life alongside his child.
Spiritual Moral: Worldly sorrow often tests human endurance to its absolute limits before opening the portal to divine revelation.
Chapter 2
The Epiphany of Goddess Devasena (Chhathi Maiya)
As the King prepares to end his life, Goddess Devasena—the mind-born daughter of Brahma and sister of Sun God Surya—manifests on a celestial swan-drawn chariot, touches the infant to life, and commands the observance of Chhath Puja.
As King Priyavrata drew his dagger, a blinding golden radiance filled the sky. Descending from the heavens was an ethereal celestial chariot. Seated within was a divine goddess of enchanting grace, dressed in pristine white, radiating the brilliance of a thousand suns.
Prostrating in wonder, the King asked: 'O Divine Mother, who are You? Why have You graced this bleak ground of cremation with Your presence?'
The Goddess spoke with soothing sweetness: 'O King! I am Devasena, the mind-born daughter of Creator Brahma. Because I manifest from the sixth cosmic aspect of primordial Nature (Prakriti), the universe reveres me as Goddess Shashthi (Chhathi Maiya). I am the guardian of all children; I bestow progeny upon the childless, health upon the sick, and protect the lives of young ones.'
Stepping forward, Goddess Shashthi gently touched the cold infant with Her divine finger. Instantly, life surged through the baby's veins—the child opened his luminous eyes and smiled, kicking playfully! Weeping with joy, King Priyavrata fell at Her feet. The Goddess ordained: 'Go, propagate the worship of Lord Surya and myself throughout your realm. Whoever stands chest-deep in pure waters on Kartika Shukla Shashthi and Chaitra Shukla Shashthi to offer sacred Arghya shall be blessed with noble, healthy progeny and protected from all grief!' The King joyously instituted the 4-day Chhath Mahaparva throughout his kingdom.
Spiritual Moral: Faith in Chhathi Maiya and the life-giving Sun restores hope where all human effort fails.
Chapter 3
Draupadi, the Pandavas and Maharishi Dhaumya's Guidance in Exile
During the Pandavas' exile in the forest, Queen Draupadi is advised by family preceptor Maharishi Dhaumya to observe the 4-day Chhath Vrat for Lord Surya, resulting in the boon of the Akshaya Patra and their eventual triumph over the Kauravas.
During the Mahabharata era, having lost their kingdom in the loaded game of dice, the Pandavas entered twelve years of forest exile accompanied by thousands of loyal Brahmins and hermits. In the wilderness, severe food shortages arose. Queen Draupadi was devastated that she could not feed the starving ascetics and guests who sought shelter at their camp.
Witnessing her anguish, the Pandavas' family preceptor, Maharishi Dhaumya, advised: 'O virtuous Draupadi! Lord Surya is the ultimate source of all sustenance, life-force, and nourishment. Observe the rigorous four-day Chhath Mahaparva in honor of Surya and Goddess Shashthi. Whosoever stands in holy waters offering Arghya to the setting and rising sun shall never experience scarcity of grains or honor.'
With unshakeable devotion, Draupadi performed the four-day rites in the forest—Nahay-Khay, Kharna, Sandhya Arghya, and Usha Arghya. Pleased by her severe austerities, Lord Surya manifested before her and bestowed the miraculous 'Akshaya Patra' (inexhaustible vessel), blessing that food would never run out until Draupadi herself had eaten. Through the spiritual merits of this Chhath Vrata, the Pandavas surmounted all obstacles during exile, triumphed in the Kurukshetra War, and reclaimed their sovereign kingdom of Hastinapur.
Spiritual Moral: Unyielding faith in nature, the life-giving Sun, and Mother Shashthi sustains the righteous through life's most barren winters.
