An authentic, heart-warming Vedic and folk liturgical guide for Bhai Dooj (Yama Dwitiya), where sisters apply auspicious Roli-Akshat tilak, tie sacred Kalava, offer dry coconut (gola), and pray for brothers' longevity, shielding them from untimely death.
Clean a sacred space in the home. Using soaked ground rice paste (Aipan/Alpana) and vermilion, draw an auspicious Chowk with geometric lotus petals. Place a wooden wooden chowki (patta) on it facing EAST or NORTH for the brother to sit.
The brother sits comfortably on the decorated chowki. The sister places a handkerchief or cap over the brother's head as a mark of respect and Vedic tradition. Light the pure ghee lamp on the pooja tray.
Using the ring finger (Anamika) of her right hand, the sister applies a vertical tilak of pure sandalwood paste followed by vibrant red roli/kumkum on the brother's forehead between the eyebrows (Ajna Chakra). Press unbroken rice grains (Akshat) onto the tilak while praying for his brilliance and longevity.
Tie the sacred red-yellow cotton thread (Kalava) around the brother's right wrist with three knots. Place a betel leaf, supari, and a whole dry coconut (gola/giri) wrapped in red moli into the brother's cupped hands. The coconut represents Lord Shiva and the gift of enduring lifespan.
Feed the brother delicious sweets (Laddoo, Peda, or homemade delicacies) and makhana. Wave the lighted ghee lamp in Aarti circles before him to dispel the evil eye. The brother presents gifts and clothes to the sister, seeking her blessings. Both conclude by partaking in the festive meal cooked by the sister.
