Step-by-Step Pooja Vidhi

1

Morning Bath, Altar Setup & 16-Friday Sankalp (संकल्प एवं वेदी)

Rise at dawn on the first Friday. Bathe, wear clean festive garments, and spread a red cloth upon a wooden chowki. Install the sacred image of Maa Santoshi. Take water and akshat in hand and resolve to observe the vrat for 16 consecutive Fridays.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
2

Kalash Sthapana & Offering Gur-Chana Naivedya (कलश एवं गुड़-चना)

Place a water-filled Kalash before Maa Santoshi and cover it with a small bowl filled with roasted chana and pieces of jaggery. Anoint the Kalash with red roli and akshat, and light the sacred ghee lamp.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
3

Recitation of Santoshi Mata Vrat Katha & Aarti

Hold a small piece of jaggery and a few grains of roasted gram in your right hand. Attentively read or listen to the sacred tale of the youngest daughter-in-law's tribulations and Maa Santoshi's miraculous grace. After completing the story, place the hand-held prasad into the Kalash bowl and sing 'Jai Santoshi Mata' Aarti.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
4

Strict Observance of the No-Sour Vow

Throughout the fasting day, you must neither consume nor serve any sour item (such as lemon, tamarind, curd, amchur, vinegar, or sour fruits) to anyone in the household or outside. Anger, deceit, and arrogance must also be avoided.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
5

16th Friday Grand Udhyapan & Feeding 8 Boys (१६वें शुक्रवार उद्यापन)

Upon completing the 16th Friday, organize the Udhyapan. Prepare sweet rice kheer, puris, and roasted gram halwa. Invite 8 young boys (or Brahmin youths), wash their feet, serve them the sweet meal with reverence, and offer them fruits, school notebooks, and sweet dakshina. Never give them money to buy sour sweets.

Sacred Vedic Mantra

  • Do not give coins/money to boys during Udhyapan that they might use to purchase sour candies.

  • Do not harbor resentment, anger, or speak harshly during the fast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is consuming or serving sour foods prohibited in Santoshi Mata Vrat?
Sourness symbolizes irritation, restlessness, and digestive heat. Refraining from sour tastes cultivates sweet speech, mental contentment (Santosh), and patient endurance, aligning the devotee's mind with Maa Santoshi's tranquil essence.
Q: What should be done if a Friday is missed during the 16-week cycle?
If a Friday is interrupted due to monthly cycles, bereavement, or sudden travel, observe mental prayer on that day without counting it toward the total. Continue the count from the subsequent Friday until all 16 pure Fridays are fulfilled.
