Step-by-Step Pooja Vidhi

1

Dwar Pooja & Toran Bandhan

Before stepping inside, worship the main threshold (Chaukhat) with Roli, Akshat, and flowers. Tie the fresh mango leaf toran over the doorway to invite positive prana.

2

Auspicious Threshold Crossing (First Entry)

The householder and spouse hold the sanctified Kalash and step across the threshold putting the right foot forward first, accompanied by the ringing of the brass bell and conch blowing.

3

Boiling Milk Ritual (Ksheera Pakam)

In the brand-new kitchen, place raw cow milk in a clean new utensil. Allow it to boil and gracefully overflow towards the East/North side, symbolizing the overflowing abundance of health, wealth, and joy in the family.

4

Vastu Purusha Invocation & Havan

Establish the Vastu Yantra in the Northeast (Ishanya) corner. Offer ghee oblations into the sacred fire while reciting the Vastu Gayatri mantra to pacify all directions.

Dos (Auspicious Actions)

  • Sleep in the new house on the very night of the Griha Pravesh ceremony
  • Keep a brass lamp or Diya burning continuously for 24 hours after entry
  • Feed cows (Gomata) and birds as the foremost act of charity in the new neighborhood

Don'ts (Things to Avoid)

  • Never perform Griha Pravesh if a female member of the family is heavily pregnant (late trimester)
  • Do not leave the newly consecrated home empty and locked for more than 3 days after the ritual
  • Never move broken, cracked, or discarded furniture into the new home on the first day

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is milk boiled to overflowing during Griha Pravesh?
Milk represents purity, nourishment, and sweet prosperity. When milk boils over without scorching, it symbolically declares that prosperity and happiness will overflow the boundaries of the household.
