Chapter 1
Goddess Parvati's Resolute Vow and Severe Himalayan Tapasya
In her incarnation as the daughter of King Himavan, Parvati resolves from childhood to wed none other than Lord Mahadeva. When her father agrees to a match with Lord Vishnu proposed by Devarshi Narada, Parvati is cast into deep grief.
Lord Shiva himself narrated this sacred memory to Mata Parvati: 'O Parvati! In your previous birth as Sati, the daughter of Daksha, you sacrificed your mortal frame in the yogic fire. You were reborn as the radiant daughter of King Himavan and Queen Maina. From tender childhood, your heart rested perpetually upon me. When you blossomed into youth, Devarshi Narada arrived at King Himavan's palace and proclaimed: 'O King of Mountains, Lord Vishnu, the supreme preserver, is the most worthy consort for your virtuous daughter. He desires her hand in marriage.' Overjoyed, King Himavan readily consented. When this news reached your ears, your heart broke into sorrow. Seeing your tears, your dear friend (sakhi) inquired of your grief. Weeping, you confided: 'My beloved friend, with my mind, speech, and soul, I have already accepted Lord Mahadeva as my eternal lord. If my father forces me into another union, I shall cast off my life!' Your loyal sakhi comforted you: 'Weep not! I shall secretly escort you to a remote, impassable forest where no one can find you.' Because your friends helped abduct and conceal you (Harita means taken away, Aalika means female friend), this sacred festival came to be known as 'Haritalika.'
Spiritual Moral: Unyielding dedication to one's spiritual truth conquers all worldly pressures.
Chapter 2
The Riverbank Shivalinga and Lord Shiva's Grand Boon
In the hidden forest along the sacred river, Parvati molded a Shivalinga from river sand, observing an intense Nirjala fast on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. Moved by her immense devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and granted her hand in divine marriage.
Reaching a secluded cavern by the sacred river, you molded a divine Shivalinga out of pure golden sand. On Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, you renounced food and water, engaging in deep penance. Throughout the night, you and your sakhis sang hymns, remaining awake through all four prahars. The intensity of your pure devotion caused Mount Kailash to tremble. Touched by your selfless surrender, I manifested before you in radiant splendor, asking: 'O divine maiden, your tapasya has won my heart. Ask for any boon you desire.' Blushing with folded hands, you whispered: 'O Lord of lords, if you are pleased with my devotion, accept me as your divine consort.' Declaring 'Tathastu' (So be it), I granted your wish. The following dawn, as you concluded the fast and immersed the sand Shivalinga in the holy stream, your distraught father Himavan located you. Weeping, he implored you to return. You answered calmly: 'Father, I have dedicated my soul to Lord Shiva, and he has blessed me with his hand. If you vow to wed me to Mahadeva, I shall return home.' Recognizing the supreme will of the divine, King Himavan gave his sacred word and celebrated our celestial marriage with grandeur. Any woman who observes Haritalika Teej with faith is blessed with Akhand Saubhagya and eternal domestic harmony. Glory to Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati!
Spiritual Moral: Divine love, perseverance, and sacrifice never go unanswered by God.
