Chapter 1
The Destitute Brahmin Widow and the Prince of Vidarbha
A poor Brahmin widow, begging for daily bread with her young child, finds an abandoned boy on the riverbank who was the prince of the fallen kingdom of Vidarbha. She raises both boys with deep love despite extreme penury.
According to the Skanda Purana, enemy forces invaded the righteous kingdom of Vidarbha in ancient times. The king fell on the battlefield, and enemies overran the land. Escaping into the deep woods with her newborn infant, the queen succumbed to fever and exhaustion, leaving the royal child weeping helplessly upon the riverbank. That very morning, a devout Brahmin widow, who sustained herself and her own little son through alms, visited the river for water. Hearing the cries of the helpless infant, maternal compassion overwhelmed her heart. Scooping up the orphan prince, she brought him to her humble hut, raising both boys as equal sons with unblemished love. Though poverty constantly tested her endurance, she instilled virtues of truth, patience, and honor into their young souls.
Spiritual Moral: Unconditional compassion and selfless care for the abandoned is the highest form of Dharma.
Chapter 2
Sage Shandilya's Guidance and the Miraculous Restoration of Royalty
The Brahmin woman meets Sage Shandilya, who reveals the boys' destinies and initiates them into the sacred Pradosh Vrat. Pleased by their worship, Lord Shiva arranges an alliance with Gandharvas, regaining the lost kingdom of Vidarbha.
Guided by destiny, the Brahmin mother brought both young boys to the hermitage of Sage Shandilya, seeking a path out of their perpetual destitution. Looking into their past karma with yogic vision, Sage Shandilya revealed: 'O noble woman, this child is no ordinary beggar; he is the true prince of Vidarbha! Both boys are experiencing hardship due to past karmic debts. The infallible remedy is the observance of Shri Shiva Pradosh Vrat on every Trayodashi. Worshiping Lord Mahadeva during the twilight hour dispels the poverty of a hundred lifetimes.' Faithful to the sage's counsel, the mother and both sons observed every Pradosh Vrat with profound devotion. Sometime later, the young prince encountered Anshumati, the heavenly daughter of a Gandharva king, wandering near the mountain groves. Lord Shiva appeared in the Gandharva king's dream, ordaining their union. The Gandharva king wed his daughter to the prince and gifted him a celestial army. With this divine legion, the prince defeated the usurpers and reclaimed the throne of Vidarbha. Upon ascending the throne, he honored the noble Brahmin widow as Queen Mother and appointed her son as his Prime Minister. By the boundless grace of Pradosh Vrat, all sorrow dissolved into lasting prosperity. Glory to Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati!
