Step-by-Step Pooja Vidhi

1

Pre-Dawn Sargi Consumption (प्रातः काल सरगी)

Wake up at Brahma Muhurat (around 04:00 AM). Bathe and consume the nourishing Sargi provided with love by mother-in-law (dry fruits, fruits, milk sweets). Rinse mouth before sunrise to begin the waterless fast.

2

Sixteen Adornments & Evening Puja Setup (सोलह शृंगार एवं वेदी)

In the late afternoon, dress in festive red or maroon bridal attire. Adorn the sixteen items of shringar (Mehndi, bindi, bangles, sindoor). Draw Karwa Mata on the wall or place her picture with Shiva-Parvati.

3

Katha Recitation & Karwa Pherna (कथा श्रवण एवं करवा फेरना)

Sit in a circle with fellow married women. Hold grains of wheat in hand and listen attentively to the sacred story of Queen Veeravati. Rotate the Karwas 7 times while singing the traditional folk rhymes.

4

Moonrise Sighting & Breaking the Fast (छलनी से चंद्र दर्शन एवं पारण)

Upon moonrise, place a burning ghee lamp on the sieve. View the radiant moon through the sieve, offer milk and water arghya from the Karwa, and then look at your husband's face through the same sieve. Touch his feet, receive gifts/blessings, and take the first sip of water from his hands.

Dos (Auspicious Actions)

  • Consume Sargi completely before sunrise to sustain energy throughout the day
  • Wear bright auspicious colors like red, maroon, pink, or yellow
  • Give the traditional Baya thali with dry fruits and clothes to mother-in-law

Don'ts (Things to Avoid)

  • Never wear black, white, or dull blue garments on Karwa Chauth
  • Do not use scissors, needles, or cutting blades on the fasting day
  • Avoid any arguments, harsh words, or disrespect towards spouse or elders

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should be done if the moon is hidden by dense clouds on Karwa Chauth?
If cloud cover obscures the moon, verify the moonrise timing according to the local Panchang. Offer Arghya facing the lunar direction in the sky, or view the moon placed upon Lord Shiva's forehead in your home temple.
