Navratri Ghatasthapana & Kalash Sthapana Vidhi (कलश स्थापना)

Ghatasthapana is the sacred foundational ritual performed on Pratipada tithi to invoke the cosmic feminine energy of Goddess Durga, establishing the Kalash, sowing the barley (Jau), and igniting the Akhand Jyoti.

Auspicious Timing WindowPratipada Tithi during Shubh Muhurat or Abhijit Muhurat. Avoid Choghadiya during Rahukaal.

Step-by-Step Pooja Vidhi

Pavitrikaran and Sankalpa (पवित्रीकरण एवं संकल्प)

Sit facing East on a clean woolen Asana. Purify self and surroundings by sprinkling Gangajal. Take water, akshat, flowers, and coin in right hand and chant the sacred Navratri Sankalpa.

Preparing the Soil and Sowing Barley (जौ बोना)

Spread pure sacred earth into the flat earthen vessel. Sow the clean barley seeds uniformly in multiple layers, moistening gently with drops of Gangajal.

Kalash Sthapana and Varun Invocation (कलश स्थापना)

Place the copper/brass Kalash at the center of the barley dish. Fill it with fresh clean water and Gangajal. Drop the betel nut (Supari), coin, and haldi knot inside. Draw a sacred Swastik on the Kalash with Roli.

Mango Leaves and Coconut Placement (नारियल एवं पल्लव स्थापना)

Arrange 5 or 7 mango leaves around the rim of the Kalash. Wrap the coconut in the sacred red chunri, tie with mauli, and place it firmly atop the Kalash, pointing towards the worshiper.

Igniting Akhand Jyoti & Durga Invocation (अखंड ज्योति एवं देवी आवाहन)

Ignite the brass ghee lamp for the Akhand Jyoti (or daily puja diya). Invoke Mother Durga with red flowers, rolli, akshat, and chant the Navarna Mantra.

Dos (Auspicious Actions)

  • Perform Ghatasthapana during morning Abhijit Muhurat or early Pratipada
  • Keep the soil moist daily with gentle water sprinkles so the barley sprouts green and lush
  • Maintain total celibacy, cleanliness, and a peaceful atmosphere in the house throughout Navratri

Don'ts (Things to Avoid)

  • Never perform Ghatasthapana during Rahu Kaal or after sunset
  • Never move or shake the Kalash once it has been consecrated until Navami/Dashami
  • Do not leave the Akhand Jyoti unattended or exposed to direct ceiling fan breezes

Q: What should be done with the sprouted barley (Khetri) after Navratri?
On Dashami, offer a few strands of green barley to elders for blessings, place some in cash lockers for prosperity, and respectfully immerse the rest in flowing holy water.
