Step-by-Step Pooja Vidhi

1

Drawing Serpent Murals on Main Entrance

After morning bath, mix cowdung or red geru with water. Using a clean twig or brush, draw the revered symbols of five or seven hooded serpent deities on both the left and right side of the home entrance to guard against negative energies.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
2

Altar Setup & Sacred Milk Bath (कच्चे दूध से नाग अभिषेक)

Place a brass or silver Nag Devta idol (or clay image) on a copper plate lined with lotus petals or fresh green leaves. Gently bathe the idol with Gangajal followed by raw unboiled cow milk, chanting the names of the serpent kings.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
3

Offering Kheel, Durva, Akshat & Chandan (लावा, दूर्वा एवं चंदन अर्पण)

Apply cool sandalwood paste to the serpent heads. Offer fresh green Durva grass (beloved to Nagas) and a generous bowl of roasted paddy kheel (lawa). Kheel cools the digestive heat of serpents during the humid monsoon season.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
4

Recitation of Navanaga Stotram & Katha

Sit with folded hands facing East and recite the story of the virtuous peasant girl whose milk offering appeased the mourning serpent mother and saved her entire family, followed by Sage Astika's hymn that quenched King Janamejaya's Sarpa Satra.

Sacred Vedic Mantra
5

Camphor Aarti & Fast Breaking with Tawa-Free Meals

Wave the pure ghee diya and burning camphor while ringing the bell. Conclude the fast by partaking of steamed, boiled, or prior-cooked foods (such as rice kheer, boiled lentils, or laddoos). Cooking directly on an iron tawa is strictly prohibited on this day.

Sacred Vedic Mantra

Dos (Auspicious Actions)

  • Draw images of serpents on both sides of the main doorway using cowdung, geru, or chandan.
  • Offer raw unboiled cow milk, roasted kheel (lawa), and durva to Nag Devta.
  • Recite the Navanaga Stotram to dispel Kalsarpa Dosha and reptile anxiety.
  • Prepare food without using an iron tawa (enjoy boiled, steamed, or sweet dishes).

Don'ts (Things to Avoid)

  • Never plow agricultural fields, dig soil, or cut earth on Naag Panchami day.
  • Do not place an iron tawa on direct flame for cooking.
  • Never harm or kill any snake; pray to them from a safe distance.
  • Do not force live snakes to drink milk into their lungs in the wild; offer it at shrines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is an iron griddle (Tawa) prohibited on Naag Panchami?
The flat, round iron tawa traditionally resembles the expanded hood of a serpent. Placing it upon blazing fire is viewed as symbolically scorching the serpent; hence, traditional families avoid the griddle and consume steamed or boiled satvik food.
Q: How does Naag Panchami worship relieve Kalsarpa Dosha?
Kalsarpa Yoga occurs when all planetary energies are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu (the cosmic serpents). Offering milk, durva, and chanting the Navanaga Stotram on this tithi pacifies serpent energies and balances astrological equilibrium.
